(Click to enlarge). Though in my own style, this one is inspired by the work of illustrator Charles Vess.

Forgotten Coast

A forgotten coast where mysteries await. A flight of fancy, drawn from nothing and for nothing in particular. Simply indulging my love of waves, rocks and trees.

A return to twining arboreal forms. What can I say? I know what I like to draw.

Mushrooms. Fungi. Toadstools. Not particularly based on reality.

This abstraction started with a series of geometric shapes that were most likely inspired by the work of Frank Gehry’s Experience Music Project on the edge of downtown Seattle. As I drew more of them, I decided it needed some sort of context — not just shapes in space, but living, growing things. So here is the result — perhaps what Howl’s Moving Castle might have looked like if Frank Gehry designed it.

Tree Concepts

I never tire of trees. These are marks I was exploring for Secret Spring Farm — legions of Douglas firs in silhouette, or a gnarled old tree like one of the cherry plums or the King apple tree that makes the place special. The second mark doesn’t quite look like an apple to me, though — maybe more of an oak. Either way, I like them as illustrations but not as logos.

King Apple Tree

This is a drawing I did of the old King apple tree, shortly after we moved out to Bainbridge. In summer 2014 it lost a number of large branches, so it no longer has such a beautiful profile — but it’s still a majestic, stately old tree.

My daughter has taken up painting since she received a set of tempera paints for her birthday, with all the enthusiasm a three-year-old can muster. Sometimes she paints familiar subjects, such as the ocean, other times she simply wants to paint the whole page with color. With her permission, I’ve repurposed one of her filled pages and added some detail of my own — this attempt at a Great Horned Owl.
