I know, I’ve been negligent. It’s tough, being unemployed and freelancing. Spent too much time this week looking for new work. Just watched the Obama acceptance speech.

I’ve got two sketches here, and I have a piece I’ve been working on for at least 4 or 5 hours now coming soon. Based on someone elses drawing, yeah, but it has been a lot of work.

Teeth are hard. I challenge you to try them yourself.

Blendy

Working on some blending from The Big Book of Drawing. I’m finding that blending with a tissue takes a lot of effort. I should get some better blending stuffs.

Draw by number

This is the first exercise in Lee Hammond’s Big Book of Drawing, where you draw a mixed up jigsaw puzzle of pieces into the correct spots, which turns out to be an upside-down horse, to prove to you that you are capable of drawing. I’ve done these before, but this one seemed kind of ridiculous with the 60 pieces, so I went and drew it right in the book. Heh. Took me a lot longer than it would have taken me if I was just drawing it from an upside-down copy, but probably more correct. I don’t like the idea of carrying a grid around with me to do this kind of visual work, but the results are easy to see.

Batteries

Camera isn’t turning on, so I guess it needs a recharge, and I’m not waiting for that since I want to sleep, so I’ll backdate tonights post tomorrow morning. Not much again anyway! In other news, I installed Google Analytics on the site, and did some optimizing after a report of poor page-load times. Let me know if there are issues.

Edit: That’s all I had done in thirty minutes, but I discovered two important things drawing those heads. The first thing I discovered was why I prefer to draw small. It’s because I can see the entire form more easily, and know when something is proportionally or perspective-ly out of whack. When it’s larger, I find myself not paying attention to it. Interesting, but now that I know it, I can account for it. And secondly, on the smaller head, I was learning some important lessons in perspective. I’m pretty good at perspective when it comes to straight lines and vanishing points and such, but it never made much sense to me organically. I can’t put my finger on what I figured out, but I found myself working out the perspective in the same way I’m learning to work out proportion. Neat, I guess. Sometimes it’s funny how you can learn a lot from something quick, and learn nothing at all from something longer. 🙂

Getting in some face time

Not much to show, but better than nothing. Trying some work on basic face-shapes.

Megapost

I did quite a bit of pose-work today, with the standard circle-and-line stick figure guys. After a bit, I tried to see what I can flesh in, following the guidance of some helpful manga instruction. Towards the end, I tried my best to copy a character that was there. I had an extremely difficult time making the head-shape not masculine, and even now, it only marginally resembles a female form. I had the hair on, but erased it off to work on the shape stuff without it getting in the way. I ought to try that again with more portait-style poses. And there are a couple lone blooks I did yesterday before I had to pass out. With yesterdays, I drew for 3.5 hours.

Faster isn’t always better.. Was tired when drawing these guys and they turned out a bit Meh, though I like the bottom right one. I promise I’ll draw earlier tomorrow : / Trying to get to the end of the head-blooks so that eventually I can play with the full bodied ones 😀

Speedblooks

These guys aren’t as polished, but I was just focused on getting basic shapes turned into blooks faster than before. Earlier I could do only about one every 10 minutes, but I’ve cut the time down a bit. It’s nice to work on little guys with more personality than your average stick figure, even if they aren’t the most exciting thing I could be drawing. 😉
