Superblook

Fun with a Pencil suggests practicing a lot of spheres, and making the dividing lines, because they are important to getting proper shapes out of them. I followed along and finished with a larger-than-usual blook.

The second exercise in DotRSotB (Oof) is to draw your own hand. I did this one fairly quickly, and trying my new shading approach, but I really need to draw it again on a larger sheet of paper. It was difficult to hold my small sketchbook steady while drawing the other hand, which couldn’t be used, of course. 😉

I might try again tomorrow. The next exercise in this book has me drawing someone from memory, which I don’t expect to enjoy.

Self Portrait

Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain’s first exercise involves making a self portrait as one it’s record-keeping exercises, to gauge improvement by the end of the book. I’ve done this twice before for this particular book, but that was over a year ago, so it definitely justified trying again. I also attempted to do some shading here, because it’s definitely a weak point. I’m relatively pleased with how it came out, some proportion errors aside. I’ll need to scan this, because the camera isn’t doing a good job with the shading. No scanner at the moment.

Today was packed. I fit in a bit of quick figure work while doing my laundry around the block. Most people moved too quickly for me to get anything meaningful. Here were the two subjects who stayed still for me the longest. I definitely need to work on proportion.

Just a few more blooks, from page 17. Looks like I’ll be doing a bunch of spheres and such next. I’m also re-reading the first chapters of “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” by Betty Edwards. I’ll get to some work on that shortly. And I’ll be catching up to Jimmy soon.

Fun with a pencil, part 1

I decided a little while to try my hand at Andrew Loomis’ version of drawing instruction, with his “Fun with a pencil” book. Hey, if it’s not fun, why do it, right? I’m just finished page 16, and the little head guys (He calls them “blooks”) are quite a bit of fun to work on. It’s taking me about ten minutes a head, which seems kind of sad. He’s got a lot of pages of blooks though, so I think I’ll be a bit faster by the end of it. 🙂

Ready, Set, Go!

Friday, October 10th, 2008 | General | No Comments

All of the worlds best ideas are formulated in the shower, as I’m sure you well know. This one is no exception. I’m Steve. Jimerson and I both believe that our drawing skills leave something to be desired, so this is our crazy plan to get better. That crazy plan is to work at it. Insane, I know, right?

It’s said that in 100 hours, you can learn a skill, and in 1000 hours, you can become proficient. You need 10000 to master it. Jimerson and I are committing to draw, bit by bit, for 1000 hours, to become better artists. We hope you’ll follow us on this long journey and lend your support!

And here we go!
