Fir Cone

Saturday, October 18th, 2008 | Drawings, Felix, Life-Drawing | No Comments

It was winding here, and raining, and the other things it does when it’s grey and a bit chilly. I was sitting outside, waiting, when it struck me that I hadn’t done my drawing for the day. Looking around for something to draw, I found this cone, which turned out to have a neat sort of pattern that I became especially aware of as I drew it.

Dislocation

A sketch of my hand. The picture was taken upside down intentionally. 😉 I’ll try this again at a later date. Perhaps when I’m not being distracted often and having to guess which perspective I was viewing my hand.

In sketches, everyone has neatly trimmed nails.

Turtle Study

A little anatomy study of the turtle. They’re a lot more complex than they might lead you to believe!

Speedblooks

Friday, October 17th, 2008 | Drawings, SteveMack | 2 Comments

These guys aren’t as polished, but I was just focused on getting basic shapes turned into blooks faster than before. Earlier I could do only about one every 10 minutes, but I’ve cut the time down a bit. It’s nice to work on little guys with more personality than your average stick figure, even if they aren’t the most exciting thing I could be drawing. 😉

More Life Drawing

Friday, October 17th, 2008 | Drawings, Felix, Life-Drawing | No Comments

I’m fairly happy with “Rachel,” but “Nate” isn’t looking so good. Not sure what I did wrong while I was drawing it, but it’s partly just that I was working with a fatter-tipped pen and it got scribbly. C’est la vie.

Superblook

Fun with a Pencil suggests practicing a lot of spheres, and making the dividing lines, because they are important to getting proper shapes out of them. I followed along and finished with a larger-than-usual blook.

Frog revisited

Thursday, October 16th, 2008 | Drawings, Jimsan | 3 Comments

After studying more frog anatomy this morning, I drew this with no reference this evening. Pardon the inaccurate anatomy. I also did some drawing in class today, which I’m tacking on as well.

Life Drawing – iPod Shuffle

Thursday, October 16th, 2008 | Drawings, Felix, Life-Drawing | No Comments

So, my main goal for this 1000 hour drawing project is to become better at drawing from life and observation rather than from my own preconceived notions of what various things look like. For things that I draw frequently, I have a template in my head of what things are supposed to look like, and my drawings reflect it.

More observation and less filling in the blanks is the order of the day.

Autumn in Seattle

Thursday, October 16th, 2008 | Drawings, Felix | No Comments

Since Steve was talking about about memory drawing, I thought I’d take a swing at it this morning. The weather’s been crisper here, and autumn is one of my favorite seasons in Seattle. I made up these two characters to illustrate the quintessential joy of the season — the return of the rain and the changing leaves.

Calling this memory drawing is a bit of a stretch, though. It’s more “loosely inspired by people I know” than trying to draw anyone or anything in particular from my head.

Palm lines

The second exercise in DotRSotB (Oof) is to draw your own hand. I did this one fairly quickly, and trying my new shading approach, but I really need to draw it again on a larger sheet of paper. It was difficult to hold my small sketchbook steady while drawing the other hand, which couldn’t be used, of course. 😉

I might try again tomorrow. The next exercise in this book has me drawing someone from memory, which I don’t expect to enjoy.
