Catching Up

Monday, October 20th, 2008 | Drawings, Felix, Life-Drawing | No Comments

Whew! Sorry about not posting over the weekend, folks. I’ve retroactively added my drawings for those days (I wasn’t slacking! Too much…). Today’s is another one somewhere between memory drawing and making it up as I went. The essence of it is, I wanted to draw a female nude, but didn’t have any nude women handy when I wanted to (I was riding the bus.) Cheers!

Not much to tell, here. Just a motorcycle I drew while waiting for a friend to finish eating lunch. It was parked by the side of the road. You can tell from the way I fudged the shapes in the middle that technical drawing is not my strong suit.

Fir Cone

It was winding here, and raining, and the other things it does when it’s grey and a bit chilly. I was sitting outside, waiting, when it struck me that I hadn’t done my drawing for the day. Looking around for something to draw, I found this cone, which turned out to have a neat sort of pattern that I became especially aware of as I drew it.

More Life Drawing

I’m fairly happy with “Rachel,” but “Nate” isn’t looking so good. Not sure what I did wrong while I was drawing it, but it’s partly just that I was working with a fatter-tipped pen and it got scribbly. C’est la vie.

Life Drawing – iPod Shuffle

So, my main goal for this 1000 hour drawing project is to become better at drawing from life and observation rather than from my own preconceived notions of what various things look like. For things that I draw frequently, I have a template in my head of what things are supposed to look like, and my drawings reflect it.

More observation and less filling in the blanks is the order of the day.

Autumn in Seattle

Thursday, October 16th, 2008 | Drawings, Felix | No Comments

Since Steve was talking about about memory drawing, I thought I’d take a swing at it this morning. The weather’s been crisper here, and autumn is one of my favorite seasons in Seattle. I made up these two characters to illustrate the quintessential joy of the season — the return of the rain and the changing leaves.

Calling this memory drawing is a bit of a stretch, though. It’s more “loosely inspired by people I know” than trying to draw anyone or anything in particular from my head.

I didn’t do as much drawing today. The three little bits I’ve got are the assembly of a poster for a friend’s concert. She didn’t want to pay a lot for printing, so the task was to have only one ink (black) on a colored paper (blue).

She was looking for a rough, informal and almost gestural type of communication for this poster. I prefer my work a bit rough around the edges anyhow— it keeps me from spending hours obsessing over whether all the lines are straight, symmetrical and “just so!”

Life Drawing

Well okay, sort of. The shoe’s a life drawing, the other one is only if you define life drawing very loosely. Our narrow friend is a combined and distorted version of various people in the room with me. The shoe is just that — a shoe (mine, specifically).

Monday’s Drawings

Monday, October 13th, 2008 | Abstract, Drawings, Felix | No Comments

Hi everyone. Steve told me about this project, and through (not) a great deal of persuasion, he said he’d let me in on the fun. Great!

Two drawings for everyone today. One’s a feather made in Adobe Illustrator, and the other’s an abstract drawing from my notebook. About 1.5 hours/each. I’ll get faster.
